School is starting in a few weeks and I have been accepted to a university in NorCal while my boyfriend has been accepted to a school in San Diego. I’m nervous about spending our first semester apart. Do you have any suggestions for maintaining closeness without seeming needy?

Sincerely,

Lonely in Sacramento

Dear Lonely,

There is a girl from the North, she is standing on a river. The river is deep. She wears a sweatshirt and no makeup; She is both young and old and her face is smooth like the river rocks she skips from the bridge above the river.

I see the foreign man approach. He smokes the vape; The flavor is Blueberry BJ. It reminds you of your family back home. You cry because the afternoon sun makes you sad. I am sure he was sick in his youth, he is pale and visibly hungover.

“Sup?”

You shrug.

“You wanna like, come to a party at ZBT tonight? We’re gonna have a ice luge for shots. It’s gonna be really clutch.”

“Nah, monsieur.”

The two of you watch the sunset in silence. Later you make love in your bunkbed. You are still wearing your boyfriend’s Army of Darkness shirt. You hold the foreign man from ZBT to your chest. He is your baby, your child.

You weep.

Sincerely,

Marguerite Duras
